Acute Low Back Pain??Better get some Physio!

Reference:Hides J, Jull G, Richardson C 2001 Long-term effects of specific stabilizing exercises for first-episode low back pain. Spine 26(11): E243-8

The 39 patients from the above-mentioned study were followed-up after 1-year and 3-years.

Result:The patients in the control group (no multifidus retraining) had an 84% recurrence rate.
BUT?

The patients in the multifidus retraining group (with transversus abdominis co-contraction) had a 30% recurrence rate! (P<0.001)

Clinical Relevance: Specific multifidus retraining (with transversus abdominis co-contraction) along with carrying on of normal activity, is more effective in reducing recurrences of low back pain than carrying on with normal activity alone.
