Calcium & Kidney Stones
Reference:Jackson RD, et al Calcium plus vitamin D supplementation and the risk of fractures. N Engl J Med. 2006 Feb 16;354(7):669-83.
This study involved again over 35,000 post-menopausal women, (50-79 years old), with a follow-up period of 7 years.
The women were randomly assigned to receive either 1000 mg of calcium carbonate with 400 IU of vitamin D3 daily or placebo.
Summary of Conclusions: Among healthy post-menopausal women, calcium with vitamin D supplementation resulted in a small (1%) but significant improvement in hip bone density …
BUT did not significantly reduce hip fracture … HOWEVER increased the risk of kidney stones.
