Poor Job Factors Predict Poor Health!

This 2011 Canadian study looked at stress-related health consequences of “precarious” employment experiences. “Precarious” is described below.

The following work characteristics predict an increased risk of adverse health outcomes.

i) Low earnings
ii) The lack of an annual wage increase
iii) Substantial unpaid overtime hours
iv) The absence of pension benefits
v) Manual work

Unfortunately this is the type of work many new immigrants find themselves ‘stuck in’ for several years. What can we do as clinicians when a patient with the above-mentioned job description on workers’ compensation walks into our clinic?
