What can reduce the risk of falls in seniors?

The 2012 Cochrane database showed that there was evidence to support the following interventions for reducing the risk of falls in the elderly.

 

  • Physiotherapy involving supervised exercises significantly reduced the risk of falls
  • Compared to carpet flooring, vinyl flooring significantly reduced the risk of falls
  • Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced the rate of fallsClinical Relevance: Based on the most current evidence, recommend to your elderly patients to comply with their balance and strengthening exercises, avoid walking on carpet, take vitamin D3 or better yet, get some sunshine!
