Glucosamine Sulphate?does it help OA?

Reference:Reginster M et al 2001 Long term effects of Glucosamine Sulphate in Osteoarthritis Progression: a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The Lancet, Volume 357, January 27

I frequently get questioned by my patients on Glucosamine Sulphate?and I usually I stay on the fence. Here is a study that has ?pushed me a little over the fence?!

A randomised, double blind placebo controlled trial used 212 patients with knee osteoarthritis.

They were randomly assigned 1500mg sulphate oral glucosamine or placebo once daily for three years.

After one year and three years, the patients receiving glucosamine had significant reductions in pain (20-25% improvement in symptoms), however the placebo group had slight worsening of their symptoms.

Clinical Relevance: You may choose to quote this study to the next patient who asks you??What do you think of Glucosamine Sulphate???Then let them decide!
