Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) Surgery?
Reference:Rozmaryn LM et al Nerve and tendon gliding exercises and the conservative management of CTS. J Hand Ther. 1998 Jul-Sep;11(3):171-9.
Within the 3 month waiting period, I would certainly prescribe nerve tendon gliding exercises for my patients with CTS.
A relatively old study showed that of the patients who performed daily self nerve and tendon gliding exercises, 43% received surgery and of those who did not receive surgery 70% reported good to excellent improvements.
Of the patients who received only splint therapy, 71% received surgery within the 1-year period.
Conclusion: A significant number of patients who would otherwise have undergone surgery may be spared from carpal tunnel release surgery by performing simple exercises.
