Prior to recommending patients to consider Omega 3s, PTs should know the potential contra-indications and the possible rare and mild side effects of taking fish oils!

Patients with diabetes are suggested to consult their physician before taking Omega 3s as taking large amounts of fish oil may make it more difficult to control blood sugar levels.

Patients on anti-coagulants or with bleeding disorders must also consult their physician before taking Omega 3s.

Potential side effects may include belching, nausea, diarrhea, and bloating. It has been suggested that cheaper and lower quality supplement have these side effects ?so if they occur, suggest switching brands. Oh yeah, very high doses may cause “fish breath”!

Having said all this, the adverse effects of Omega 3s for inflammatory control are far fewer, less common and less serious than those of NSAIDs!!
