STARmat: ACL Deficiency Can be Identified

Reference:Herrington L, Hatcher J, Hatcher A, McNicholas M. A comparison of Star Excursion Balance Test reach distances between ACL deficient patients and asymptomatic controls. Knee. 2009 Mar;16(2):149-52.

Is the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) a sensitive test for detecting ACL deficiency?

ACL deficient patients have been shown to have significantly lower SEBT reach distances when compared to normal asymptomatic subjects.

Interestingly, even the uninjured leg of the patients with ACL deficiency were shown to have significantly reduced SEBT reach distances compared to the control subjects. It may be hypothesized that pre-existing poorer postural control may have predisposed the individuals to an ACL injury in the first place.
