Taping for Multifidus Activation!

This is another simple, yet effective taping technique described by Jenny McConnell for “stabilizing an unstable lumbar spine”.

The one strip of tape is simply applied directly across the level where the segmental motor control impairment is suspected.

Ensure wrinkles are made when pulling the brown tape. The goal is to squish the paraspinal muscles together. It may be hypothesized that the tape helps facilitate multifidus muscle contraction.

The tape may also provide proprioceptive feedback to help the patient maintain neutral spine at that level. Of course, the tape may also have the potential placebo effect! And I always say, the more placebo …the better!!
