Yoga RCT on Stress in the Workplace
Reference:Hartfiel N et al The effectiveness of yoga for the improvement of well-being and resilience to stress in the workplace. Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment &Health. 2011; 37(1):70-6
This 2011 RCT allocated university employees into one of these 2 groups:
i) Once a week for a 60-minute class of Dru Yoga, during their lunch break ii) A wait-list control group
In a Nutshell: After just 6 weeks, compared to the control group, those in the yoga intervention
i) Had significantly better psychological scores with respect to mood and general well-being
ii) Reported marked improvements in feelings of clear-mindedness, energy, life purpose and satisfaction, and feelings of greater self-confidence during stressful situations
Clinical Relevance: Suggest to your patients who admit to feeling low, hopeless, stressed, and over-whelmed at work or with life, to consider practicing Yoga at least once a week for 60 minutes …join community center classes or get a Yoga DVD from the library!
Personal Comment: I attempt to do some form of meditation for 20 minutes at least once/week. “I don?t have time”, is really a bad excuse.
